Why we need better data
This site publishes what has been counted. This is what has not been, continent by continent.
The world, in three buckets
2.67 billion children were aged 0–19 in 2023. 631.1 million of them — 23.7% — are inside the pooled figure on this site. 1.07 billion have a page that yields no comparable rate. 965.1 million have nothing at all.

What these words mean
Years cut out of a series that is here
Non-submissions carried as zeros
16 yearsA year the source sent as all zeros. Deleted — zero is not a count.
Years cut off at a long gap
34 yearsYears stranded on the wrong side of a gap of four or more.
Years filled in
119 yearsOne to three missing years, straight-lined between their neighbours. Flagged as estimates.
Years published and not collected
166 yearsYears the country’s own office has published and this site has not.
Why a jurisdiction with a page is not pooled
Too few deaths for a rate
28 jurisdictionsUnder fifteen deaths in the whole record. Any rate is one death wide.
A rate too low to believe
16 jurisdictionsUnder 0.5 per 100,000 — a measure of certification, not of children.
Rates without counts
1 jurisdictionRates published, counts not. Nothing can be pooled or given an interval.
Not published at 0–19
2 jurisdictionsThe source’s bands do not tile onto 0–19, and none is interpolated.
A different definition
1 jurisdictionCoronial, police or lay-reported deaths. A real count, another measurement.
Registration under half
noneFewer than half the country’s deaths are registered at all.
A year without a denominator
noneA year with deaths and no population to divide them by.
A state that no longer exists
noneIts years are real. There is no population today to pool them against.
A page with no rate
2 jurisdictionsSomething is published and it is not a rate.
How close a missing jurisdiction is
Published, not collected
Cause by age and sex is published, suicide named. Only the work is missing.
Reachable, not as published
A system exists; what it publishes does not separate suicide.
No system to ask
Little registration, no certified cause, or no report ever published.
Where these numbers come from
- Children — UN World Population Prospects, ages 0–19 at 2023. The same denominator every rate on this site uses.
- What a country publishes — this project’s availability audit of all 243 jurisdictions. Modelled WHO and GBD estimates were never accepted as evidence, which is why it can say a country is missing.
- Grades — WHO Global Health Estimates 2021 methods annex, Table 4.1, which covers 119 jurisdictions and no others.
- Continents — the six in this site’s page menu. Fifty-eight jurisdictions too small for the map take the audit’s UN region; they hold 2.8 million children.
- Counted means eligible for the pooled figure. The rate itself is computed one year at a time, so the 4 whose series stops before 2015 are in this roster and not in that arithmetic: Kiribati, Albania, Fiji and Suriname.
- Not in any continent — the former Czechoslovakia, the former Federal Republic of Germany, Serbia and Montenegro and the former Yugoslavia. Real years, no population today to count them against.
- Every figure is computed at build time by
source/betterdata.py, which runs on its own and prints the same tables.
